چکیده

I T HAS BEEN ONLY RECENTLY that significant progress has been made in the study of leukocyte kinetics and cell proliferation in acute leukemia. This became possible with the introduction of tritiated thymidine (H3TdR), a labeled precursor specffic for DNA.’ With the technic of radioautography, this labeled compound has been employed in vivo to investigate the leukemic cell cycle and cell proliferation in patients with acute leukemia in relapse and in blastic crisis.24’ In vitro studies to characterize the proliferative capacity of leukemic leukocytes have also been performed.3’6”248 The purpose of this paper is to present data concerning peripheral blood leukocyte kinetics in patients with acute leukemia both in relapse and remission and in patients with chronic myelocytic leukemia in blastic crisis. Liquid scintillation counting of isolated leukocytes and radioautography following single intravenous injections of H3TdR were employed in these studies.

Function of Neutrophils in Different Phases of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

In chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), the mature granulocytes originate from a stem cell line harboring an abnormal chromosome, therefore it is possible that metabolic-functional abnormalities occur in the morphologically mature cells. In the present study, the phagocytic activity including intracellular killing, nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction, and phagocytosis were studied in 37 CML p...

Serine and aspartic acid metabolism in leukemic leukocytes: correlation to effectiveness of therapy.

Leukocytes from patients with acute granulocytic leukemia (AGL), acute monocytic leukemia (AMoL) and blastic crisis of chronic granulocytic leukemia (BC) were incubated with serine-U-C’4 or aspartic acid-U-C’4. The metabolism was followed by determination of radioactivity of CO , lipids, proteins, organic acids, and nucleotides. Leukemic leukocytes in AGL, AMoL, and BC exhibit high serine utili...

Mitoxantrone in patients with acute leukemia in relapse.

Twenty-six patients with acute leukemia in relapse were treated with mitoxantrone (dihydroxyanthracenedione dihydrochloride). The drug was given as a rapid i.v. infusion for 5 days, and doses were escalated from 8 mg/sq m daily for 5 days to 20 mg/sq m daily for 5 days. Five of 12 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia were induced into complete remission; one patient was induced into compl...
